Creativity is Our Only Hope | Letter to a Friend #3

Hey friend,

Today I'm thinking about creativity. If you've been paying attention to my YT/IG, you'll notice I'm making a lot of content on web3 and tools for "creatives". This doesn't just mean artists or musicians - entrepreneurs are creators, too.

But why is creativity worth focusing on?

To put it bluntly, creativity is all we're going to have left after automation and other advances in artificial intelligence, and that's assuming AI can't eventually replicate creativity, too. For those of us at the beginning of our careers, we need to prepare for a world in which our creativity and "soft skills" are our greatest advantage. And, in my opinion, we need to craft our careers around this fact.

We each need to find our niches, find where we can contribute our unique creations to the world, and center our careers around that. This doesn't mean we all need to become traditional painters or musicians or anything. It means do something that only you can do. If you do that, you are a creator, and a valuable one at that.

It's riskier. It puts you in the spotlight. It makes you responsible for your creations. But it's also a hell of a lot more fulfilling than the alternative, where you're a cog in a machine that can easily be swapped out. Talk about a lack of meaning or purpose.

Anyways, if you're looking to explore these ideas more, I'd highly recommend Seth Godin's work, specifically his book Linchpin. Also, I made a video a while ago about on Two Skills That Will Guarantee a High-Paying Job (in Any Field) that talks about preparing for the future of work, and the resources I mention are excellent for further exploration.

The future is going to be very different. Careers in 20 years will be very different from careers today, but they'll be a lot more exciting and fulfilling if you prepare for it well.

Talk to ya next week!

Much love,

Ryan
