Do You Have a World Class Mentality? | Letter to a Friend #14

Hey friend,

I just got back to Hawai`i, am currently sun-burnt to shit and I feel amazing. I spent all day on the beach with friends yesterday drinking and eating and was reminded of how important it is to just take a day off, completely. The irony is it is those days that help me clarify exactly what it is I want to be doing when I come back to "work mode", so technically they're still productive, which is great for an obsessive productivist like myself!

In the vein of work/business, I've been devouring a book called How Rich People Think. The author divides people into "middle class" and "world class" and describes the differences in how each group thinks about money. One of the main points is that middle class tend to have a belief that money/being rich is evil and unnecessary, claiming a sort of moral high ground over their lack of desire for it while struggling to pay the bills. On the other hand, "world class" believe being rich is a proper reward for solving problems and should be pursued as it relieves stress, opens opportunities and allows for more generosity.

While I believe I have a primarily "world class" attitude towards money, I've still been hesitant to make it an absolute priority and admit to myself and others that I want to be rich. I still have had some shame in acknowledging that, for one reason or another.

After reading this book, however, I feel absolutely certain that I want to be rich, and feel no shame about the fact. How will I do this? By solving problems in the world. If that is the method by which one attains wealth, it is hard for me to imagine why such a desire should be attacked.

However, I'm curious to hear other thoughts as always. I'd imagine you likely think the same way (given most of you reading this are #Babson), but if you don't, let me know why!

Additionally, I invite you to check out the book (or others like it) and reflect on how you think about money. Chances are, unless you've had many rich mentors, you (like me) have grown up with a middle class mentality, which will likely keep you from reaching true financial freedom.

Hope you're doing well and I'll write ya next week!

Much love,
Ryan
