Living in a U-Haul Truck | Letter to a Friend #8
April 11, 2022
Aloooha friend!
I am moving into a U-Haul truck in 4 days. Not sure how many of you know but I have been super lucky this semester and living it up in a ridiculously nice house for equally ridiculously cheap, yet it is coming to an end in 4 days as the owners are returning from their vacation. Thus, I find myself about to move into the equivalent size of a U-Haul truck with my two roommates this Friday.
Everyone I tell kind of freaks out and cannot believe we are actually going to live in it, but between the three of us we are excited. We tend to prioritize excitement and craziness over comfort, so the ridiculousness of our living in a truck (we think) will outweigh the fact that we will almost be sleeping on top of the other. Personally, I have slept in vans before plenty of times, so this is not as new as it might be for some.
The whole situation reminds me of a lesson I learned a couple years ago, however, which is this: You can have fun, or you can have comfort, but it is expensive to have both.
I learned this visiting my aunt in California on the way back to school after a 3-day trip around O`ahu sleeping in the back of a Prius with my brother. We had a lot of fun for cheap, but it was not comfortable. The contrast was my aunt's nice suburban home in the Bay Area, which was extremely comfortable but no fun. That was the sacrifice she chose to make, and I chose to make the opposite.
This speaks to a greater lesson around values and putting in time and energy into deciding, for yourself, what it is you prioritize/value. If you value something (fun) over something else (comfort), you might end up making very different decisions than other people, and it is important to be aware of that so you are not drawn in by what others might be.
Personally, I am prioritizing fun at the moment, and I would (unsurprisingly) encourage you to do the same. After all, it is often the things we do not do that we regret the most.
Much love,
Ryan
