The Fun Path to Extraordinary Results | Letter to a Friend #12

Hey friend,

I'm excited. I'm excited about the possibilities of life.

I went door-to-door a couple days ago in the neighborhood near my college and asked people if I could talk to them to do some market research for a new business idea I'm exploring. This neighborhood is one of the richest in the country (average income of $633,310 according to this website), so almost everyone you talk to is very successful financially.

They were thrilled that I was going door-to-door. They gave me their emails, phone numbers, offered to help in any way that they could, and even offered to help me find a job! (He was a recruiter for tech companies.)

Multiple people emphasized how impressed they were that I showed up on their door, and I think that this was a key reason why many were so keen to help. By doing something that nobody else does, they were likely more willing to help because I made myself stand out.

If I wanted a job, sure, maybe I could go to my school's career center and join all the other applicants in the standard applicant process. Or I could show up on the CEO's doorstep (maybe slightly unrealistic but you get the point).

If you want average results, do what the average person would do. If you want extraordinary results, do what the average person wouldn't do.

This letter is not to pat myself on the back (okay maybe a little bit), but to encourage you to do what the average person wouldn't do. Whether that's door-to-door sales or something else entirely, just ask yourself before starting: How can I do this differently?

Standing out just a little bit goes a long way, and, to me at least, it is a much more exciting way to go about things.

I wish you luck on your atypical adventures. :)

Much love,
Ryan
